Opening databases

Builds and the Build screen use the Lichess database: games between players rated 1600 and above.

Engine

Builds calculate with Stockfish on this computer, while this app is open, not on our server. Choose how much of the computer it may use. The choice is kept in this browser, so each computer you use has its own.

Power

Calculate the lines on my trail ahead of time

While this app is open and no build is running, at Low power whatever is chosen above. A build started from one of those lines then only stops to ask you something.

Stored calculations

Every position this app analyses is kept and reused, and Lichess's cloud analysis and ChessDB are asked before any engine is started. Both are free, need no account, and hold depth 50-60 on most opening positions — deeper than a run here would reach. A stored answer is reused only when it is at least as good as what is being asked for, so raising the node limit still runs the engine.

Administrators only — this is shared by everyone on this machine.

Board sounds

Synthesized in the browser — there are no audio files in this project. See LICENSES.md for why.

Hear them

These play even with sound off, so you can hear what you are turning on.

Voice PRO

On the Repertoire tab, while you are studying, the 🎤 Voice button lets you say the move instead of clicking it — “e4”, “knight f3”, “bishop takes c4”, or just “b takes c4”. Only legal moves are considered, which is what lets it cope with being misheard.

Microphone

Choosing one asks for permission, so the bar can show you it works.

Language you will speak

Piece names work in either — “alfil por c4” and “bishop takes c4” reach the same move.

"Follow my system" changes with Windows, including while the app is open. The board keeps its own colors either way — those are below.

Individual pieces

A folder in web/board/pieces/ is a piece set: one image per piece — pawn.png, knight.png — and it appears here on the next F5. Name a file for one side (white-pawn.png) to use its own colors; leave the color out and both sides are drawn from it, tinted by the theme.

Every color, size and speed is a variable in web/theme.css — including these palettes. Edit that file and press F5 to change what any of them means, or to add one of your own.
